Middletown Springs Historical Society 2021 Maple Festival Raffle

We are so thankful to those that have donated these wonderful items for the Maple Raffle. Here is how it works: This is a "targeted" raffle where participants can "bid" on specific items or the raffle ticket can go into a drawing for a general raffle. Tickets cost $5 each or five for $20. There are five raffle tickets per sheet. There is no limit on how many tickets you submit. To bid on a specific item or go into the general raffle drawing, simply fill out the tickets and mail them with your check to: Middletown Springs Historical Society, P.O. Box 1121, Middletown Springs, VT 05757. Raffle tickets must be postmarked by March 20, 2021.

We will notify the winners and arrange for delivery. Please direct questions to David Wright at 802-235-2376 or Pat Hemenway at 802-235-2421.

The farm geese were having a good time in a local barnyard when Artist Peter Huntoon captured them in his weekly painting. In is own words, "I learned a fun new word recently. Anthropomorphism is a literary device that assigns human characteristics to nonhuman entities like animals or inanimate objects. Like empathy, it’s a worthy perspective to paint from."

Peter Huntoon is a well known artist.  A Day in Vermont is his weekly email love letter featuring a brand new painting.  You can find his work at peterhuntoon.com.

Spinning Lessons - Spinning is the process used to make yarn for knitting. Early spinning was done on a drop spindle and later spinning on a spinning wheel.  If you are already a knitter, this will give you the opportunity to customize the yarn you use for weight, warmth and softness. If you are not a knitter, this will give you a chance to learn the basics.

Two one-hour zoom classes are offered allowing time between classes to practice.  Needed materials will be provided including the use of a drop spindle and the needed wool roving.  Student(s) will have the opportunity to examine exotic fibers from angora (rabbit) to qiviut (musk ox). If scheduled after Covid vaccinations are completed students will be able to test out spinning on an antique or modern spinning wheel.

Item #17 - "Miracle at Philadelphia" Book

"Miracle at Philadelphia" is Catherine Drinker Bowen's work of historical non-fiction account of the Constitutional Convention that is held in 1787, during which delegates from 12 of the 13 newly independent American states hammer out what will become the United States Constitution. She draws much of her information from notes and journals of the Framers, especially James Madison and deals with important compromises such as slavery. Near Fine in a Near Fine slipcase. Four hours of consultation by a trained and experienced genealogist and MSHS member, Anne Pratt Slatin, who holds a professional genealogical research certificate from Boston University.  She also has earned another certificate from Excelsior College (part of SUNY).  Anne does not work on adoptions or missing persons.  Anne is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists, The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, and the New England Historic Genealogical Society.

Work may be done by telephone, by mail or e-mail.
